CARES Act Funding Now Available

The Town of Mount Pleasant and surrounding areas: The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is providing funding to the Charleston County Community Development Department from the CARES Act to be used to prevent, prepare for, and respond to the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). You can receive assistance with rent, mortgage, utilities, food, prescriptions, legal services (evictions) and homelessness. Citizens must meet HUD eligibility requirements to receive assistance and must live outside the City of Charleston (the City receives its own HUD funding). CCSD Family Support Line

Charelston County School District now has a family support line for students and parents needing assistance.  The support line is an additional resource for students or parents that need support in any area ranging from mental health to homework.  For more information CLICK HERE


IRS Economic Impact (Stimulus) Payments

The IRS says that for most taxpayers, the stimulus payment issued for Coronavirus Relief, is automatic.  This means that the majority of Americans will not have to do anything to receive their funds.  However, to check the status of your payment, update direct deposit information with the IRS, or for other stimulus related questions CLICK HERE

BoeingSC DreamLearners

BoeingSC has exciting learning tools for students grades 6-12. FUTURE U is a program partnership between Boeing and Discovery Education that includes a collection of online lesson plans, videos, interactive media and design challenges intended to increase student interest and aptitude for 21st century skills.  Students can take virtual field trips, contemplate moon tourism, create landing systems, and so much more! Access to Internet for Students

Do you or someone you know need internet access for a school-aged child?  There are various companies offering free internet connection as well as discounts to students who need to complete classes online. Contact your local service provider to inquire about access and discounts. The following links are examples of provider announcements.

Comcast / Xfinity
 
Comcast has also opened their Xfinity hotspots for free.  Anyone should be able to connect to one of those hotspots if it shows up in the available Wi-Fi connection on their device.
 
Charter / Spectrum 
Charter will offer FREE Spectrum broadband and Wi-Fi access for 60 days to households with K-12 and/or college students who do not already have a Spectrum broadband subscription. The phone number is 1-844-488-8395. 
 
 
Verizon has now increased the amount of data that can be used without penalty making cellphones useful for hotspots. 
 
AT&T:  Keeping Service Connected and Waiving Charges
AT&T is offering schools 60 days of unlimited data for laptops, tablets and hotspots
AT&T will keep their public Wi-Fi hotspots open for anyone who needs them
AT&T will keep service connected, waive late payment fees, and waive data, voice and text overage charges for any wireless customer experiencing hardship caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
 
In many rural areas, local school districts are parking school buses with Wi-Fi to make internet access available to students. Even though they are closed, public libraries, restaurants, and hotels are also boosting their coverage so that the internet is available outside the buildings. Areas such as Goose Creek have citywide internet coverage thanks to Google.
